Four Gujarati devotees met a tragic end in a horrific road accident that occurred early Thursday morning on the Gangotri Highway in Uttarkashi. An Innova car, travelling from Haridwar towards Gangotri, became uncontrolled and plunged from a deep gorge directly into the Ganga river. One youth was seriously injured in the mishap and has been shifted to a hospital for immediate treatment.
According to a report by ABP Asmita, the Innova car involved in the accident bore registration number UK08 TA6040. A total of seven devotees, who had set out on a holy pilgrimage, were on board. When the car reached Dabara, approximately 20 metres ahead of Dhara Kund on the banks of the Ganga river, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle. Consequently, the car fell straight into the gorge.
Upon receiving information about the incident, local police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and 108 emergency service teams reached the spot immediately. Despite the strong current of the river and the car being trapped between rocks, rescuers launched relief and rescue operations on a war footing. After a long struggle, four bodies were recovered from the river.
It has emerged that the passengers in the car at the time of the accident were residents of Gujarat. The bodies of the deceased have been recovered, while an intensive search operation is still underway to find other missing persons. This tragedy has once again raised questions regarding driver negligence and the inherent risks of travelling on hilly roads.
The administration and the Disaster Management Department have accelerated the rescue operation. It has also appeared that strict road safety measures will be inevitable in the future to prevent the recurrence of such accidents. Currently, further details regarding the condition of the injured youth are being received and the search operation continues.
