Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced the state government's ambitious plan to establish India's and perhaps the world's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university in Bengaluru. According to a report by News18, the Chief Minister has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to partner with the state and provide co-financing to make this project a success.
Chief Minister Shivakumar wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi on 4 November. This letter was written in response to the Kannada Rajyotsava greetings sent by the Prime Minister. In this letter, the Chief Minister sought not only an AI university but also a special financial package for the development of Bengaluru's infrastructure. He argued that Bengaluru's contribution to India's economic growth is significant, and therefore, the city should receive more investment for its development. He noted that the growing population and economic activities in Bengaluru have put immense pressure on the city's roads, public transport, and civic amenities.
These demands come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Karnataka on 13 November for the inauguration of the Pink Line of Namma Metro. The Chief Minister welcomed the Prime Minister's arrival and simultaneously sought additional central financial assistance for Bengaluru's infrastructure. Shivakumar stated that the state government is in discussions with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs regarding additional funding for public projects, housing targets, and alternative funding mechanisms.
To improve the health sector, the Chief Minister reiterated the demand for establishing an AIIMS in Raichur to strengthen medical care and education in the Kalyana Karnataka region. Additionally, he requested the swift release of the pending drought relief funds to the state.
The letter also drew attention to issues in the agricultural sector, particularly the problems faced by sugarcane farmers. The Chief Minister sought the Prime Minister's personal intervention to resolve the issues of sugarcane farmers and warned that the sugarcane crushing season is already delayed. He mentioned a meeting held on 26 October in Belagavi with sugarcane producers, farmer leaders, and sugar mill representatives, where farmers demanded better prices for their produce.
Shivakumar informed that all 81 currently operational sugar mills are using digital weighbridges and mill laboratories are inspected twice a month. Although 99.85% of sugarcane dues for 2025-26 have been paid, farmers are expressing concerns regarding sugarcane prices and the low base recovery rate for Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP).
The Chief Minister presented four specific demands before the Central Government, with the primary demand being the revision of the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar. He stated that since February 2019, the price of sugar has remained stagnant at ₹31 per kg, while on the other hand, FRP has increased from ₹2,750 to ₹3,650 per tonne.
Speaking on the drinking water crisis, Shivakumar stated that there are 101.10 lakh rural households in Karnataka, of which only 24.51 lakh households had tap connections at the start of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
