Lok Sabha Speaker accepts resignation of Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has accepted the resignation of Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the Member of Parliament from the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. An official notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat stated that Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the elected member from the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, has resigned from his Lok Sabha seat, and the Speaker has accepted this resignation effective from November 3, 2026.

According to a report by The Hindu, Aga Ruhullah resigned from both the Lok Sabha seat and the National Conference (NC) party on Tuesday, November 3, due to serious differences with the party leadership. This decision brings an end to the bitter tension ongoing with the National Conference leadership.

Surprisingly, Aga Ruhullah made this announcement while addressing a public gathering in Budgam, Central Kashmir. The event was organised on the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi, who was murdered in the year 2000. During this rally in Budgam, he launched sharp attacks on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah. He described his exit from the party as a "decree of freedom" from a "deceitful and corrupt organisation."

Following Aga Ruhullah's resignation, a total of three seats have now fallen vacant in the Lok Sabha. The other two vacant seats include Shillong from Meghalaya and Basirhat from West Bengal. The Shillong seat became vacant after the demise of MP Ricky Andrew J. Singkon, and the Basirhat seat after the demise of MP Haji Nurul Islam. Thus, there are now vacancies for representatives in three constituencies, including Srinagar, in the Lok Sabha.
