Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, ordered the approval of ₹2,000 crore for the implementation of the 'Vetri Laptop Scheme'. The primary objective of this scheme is to increase the technological proficiency of college students.
According to a report by The Hindu, administrative approval for this scheme has been granted by the state government. It is noteworthy that this scheme was announced during the 2026-27 budget, for the implementation of which ₹2,000 crore will be spent.
To monitor the effective implementation of the scheme, a high-level steering committee will be constituted under the leadership of the Chief Minister. Additionally, the responsibility for the procurement of laptops and maintaining quality control has been assigned to the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), which has been granted administrative approval for the same.
Regarding the beneficiaries of the scheme, students pursuing first and second-year undergraduate and diploma courses in government and government-aided colleges during the academic year 2026-2027 will be eligible to receive these laptops. This includes students pursuing courses in Arts and Science, Engineering, Polytechnic, ITI, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Fisheries, Agriculture, and Law.
Under this scheme, not only new students but also those pursuing third and fourth-year professional courses who did not receive the benefit of the laptop scheme during the academic year 2025-26 will be included. These students must be studying in government or government-aided colleges.
According to the government notification, considering the specific technological requirements of engineering students, they will be provided with laptops featuring Intel Core i5 processors or specifications of equivalent capacity, so that they can progress better in their studies.
