Two women were arrested on Wednesday from Gaya International Airport in Bihar on charges of smuggling 10 kilograms of cannabis. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the operation was carried out by a joint team of Customs and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The apprehended women have been identified as Simranjit and Kulwinder, who, according to preliminary investigations, are residents of Punjab.
According to information provided by officials, both women had landed at Gaya Airport after travelling from Chiang Mai International Airport in Thailand on a Thai Airways flight. During security checks at the airport, when their luggage was passed through the X-ray machine, CISF and other security personnel noticed suspicious items in the bags. Based on this suspicion, both women were detained and interrogated.
During the investigation, when their luggage was thoroughly searched, 10 kilograms of cannabis were found cleverly concealed in four different bags. The estimated value of this consignment in the international market is believed to be around ₹10 crore. Upon the recovery of the cannabis, security agencies arrested both women.
Providing further details, officials stated that these women were part of a group of six people who had gone to Thailand four days ago. Two women from this group arrived at Gaya Airport on Wednesday with the narcotics consignment, while the other four members of the group have not yet reached the airport. Currently, an investigation is underway regarding the permanent addresses of the two arrested women and the entire network.
It has also been noted that the Chief Minister of Bihar has launched a month-long campaign to make the state drug-free. Security arrangements at Gaya Airport have been further tightened to prevent such illegal activities. Further legal proceedings have been initiated by the Customs Department in this matter.
