Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met the parents of two IIT Bombay students, Sahil Wakode and Aniket Ambore, who had committed suicide. During the meeting, Rahul Gandhi promised his full support to the bereaved families and assured them that he stands with them in their pursuit of justice. In addition to this meeting, the parents of the victim students also met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad was also present during the meeting. Gaikwad told reporters that the parents had provided Rahul Gandhi with detailed information regarding the entire incident. The discussion lasted for approximately one and a half hours. Rahul Gandhi assured the families that he is with them and that all possible assistance would be provided by the Congress party as well as him personally.
MP Varsha Gaikwad described the death of Sahil Wakode as an "institutional murder." She levelled a serious allegation that a racist atmosphere prevails within the IIT Bombay campus in Mumbai. Providing statistical data, Gaikwad stated that four students have committed suicide in the last 13 months. Furthermore, she claimed that a total of 14 students have committed suicide at IIT Bombay so far.
Varsha Gaikwad also presented a presentation on the situation at IIT before Rahul Gandhi. She emphasised that this is a very significant issue and a deep investigation should be conducted. She demanded that the students receive justice so that other cases like Sahil's do not occur in the future. Posting on the social media platform 'X', Gaikwad stated that both Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have received detailed information on the matter and the Congress will stand firmly with the families to ensure they get justice.
Gaikwad further alleged that the culprits in this case are being protected. She informed that despite a case being registered under the SC/ST Act, attempts are being made to shield the concerned professors. Gaikwad wrote in her post that students from backward classes are facing injustice and mental harassment at IIT Bombay. She demanded an end to the racism prevalent in the institution.
Demanding justice for Sahil's family, Gaikwad said that even after the FIR was registered, no strict action has been taken to arrest the concerned professor. She stated that a delegation of the Mumbai Congress met Director General of Police Sadanand Date along with Sahil's parents, demanding immediate action in the matter.
Regarding the timeline of the events, reports state that Sahil Wakode passed away in September 2026, while Aniket Ambore passed away in September 2014. Aniket had fallen from the sixth floor of his hostel and was found in a critical condition leading to death.
According to a report by Amar Ujala, Congress leaders and MP Varsha Gaikwad are continuously exerting pressure on the matter so that the victim families receive justice and racism in educational institutions comes to an end.
