Twenty transgender individuals aspiring to become constables and sub-inspectors in the Telangana Police will be provided with four months of special coaching and hostel facilities. This empowerment programme, launched by the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate, primarily aims to help transgender candidates prepare for the 2026 police recruitment process.
According to a report by The Hindu, this initiative has been undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens, and Transgender Persons. The entire programme is being coordinated by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Telangana Women Safety Wing.
On the occasion of the programme's inauguration, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi distributed study materials to the 20 selected candidates. These materials include subjects such as the history of India and Telangana, arithmetic and reasoning, geography, current affairs, and economics. Following the Police Commissioner's request, the department has sanctioned ₹3.50 lakh for the coaching and hostel expenses of the candidates.
The selected candidates will be guided by the 'Unique Coaching Centre' and provided accommodation at the 'Kalpana Hostel' located in Dilsukhnagar. To monitor the progress of the candidates and provide necessary assistance, a dedicated WhatsApp group has been created, comprising the candidates, AHTU officials, departmental representatives, coaching faculty, and hostel management.
Police Commissioner B. Sumathi stated that the candidates will receive regular coaching and accommodation, while their progress will be closely monitored by the AHTU. Additionally, the Women Safety Wing will explore possibilities for appropriate duty adjustments, subject to departmental rules, for traffic assistants currently on duty, so they can participate in coaching and physical fitness training.
Currently, several transgender individuals are working as traffic assistants in Hyderabad, with two individuals serving under the Malkajgiri Commissionerate.
