Tech giant Google, based in Mountain View, California, announced on Tuesday that students in schools that refuse to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be able to use the company's search engine. For students using Google software in the classroom, search access will only be available if their school system consents to the use of AI.
According to reports by The Hindu and NDTV, Google will no longer keep AI tools as a default option for school administrators. K-12 schools will now have the authority to individually turn each Google tool on or off. These tools include Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search. Initially, all these features will be off by default and will only become operational when enabled by school administrators. However, since Google Search is now integrated with AI, schools that decide to completely opt out of AI will also lose the Google Search facility.
Chris Philipps, Vice President and General Manager of Education at Google, stated in a blog post, “We believe that schools should have control over AI in their classrooms and that administrators should be provided with controls to help manage their approach.”
The company further stated that it is updating its search tools to make them “better for learning.” This update includes step-by-step guided instruction for problems, ensuring students do not get quick answers to their schoolwork and instead understand the process.
However, if schools wish to use Google's products, it will not be possible to turn off AI entirely. Google is currently the largest provider of education technology for US schools. According to the company, 15 crore students and teachers worldwide use its Google Classroom platform, and many students use Chromebook computers provided by their schools.
Google faced heavy opposition in August when it enabled its Gemini chatbot for many K-12 students. Until before August, Google had only allowed Gemini to be enabled for students aged 18 or older. Following this decision, reactions regarding the use of the company's technology began from teachers, child development experts, and parents.
Following Tuesday's announcement, sharp criticism has come from educators and policymakers. Lina Khan, former Chair of the Federal Trade Commission, wrote on social media, “Google is using its search monopoly to force schools to adopt AI. This exposes the risk of giving an unregulated monopolist control over an essential service.” She further added, “As the public resists the use of AI in schools, Google is making it clear that it will punish those who do not comply.”
In New York City and Los Angeles, which have some of the largest school districts in America, a temporary ban has been imposed on generative AI tools in primary and secondary schools. These cities are evaluating the use and safety of AI and are developing policies regarding its usage.
Experts have expressed concern that many students are already using AI for school and homework, but this technology has made it easier to cheat and find quick, easy answers to questions instead of engaging in critical thinking. Additionally, experts have raised questions about how access to AI is affecting the brain development of children.
Josh Golin, Executive Director of the children's advocacy group 'Fairplay', stated that Google's attempt to pressure schools into using its AI products could backfire. He argued that the purpose of Google's technology in schools is not to educate, but to develop “lifelong brand loyalty” for its products.
Golin added in a statement, “Because AI is not safe for children and it undermines education and critical thinking, schools should turn off Google's AI tools the moment this option becomes available.”
Google is a multinational technology company based in Mountain View, California, operating in the fields of search engines, cloud computing, and software, and holds extensive influence in the education sector through its Classroom platform.
