The Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) has exposed a major cross-border recruitment gang that was linking Indian youth with a Pakistani terrorist network through the social media platform Instagram. According to a report by India Today, this gang was linked to Pakistani terrorist Shahzad Bhatti, who was luring Indian youth to involve them in criminal activities and target killings.
Investigations revealed that the network targeted youth using social media. These operatives first contacted vulnerable and financially needy youth through Instagram Reels. Once they gained the trust of the youth, they shifted the conversation from Instagram to encrypted messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Signal to keep the communication more secure and confidential.
Financial assistance was offered as a lure to connect youth with this network. Additionally, they were offered fake passports and assigned logistics-related tasks. The ultimate goal of this process was to use these youth to carry out target killings and other serious criminal activities.
During this operation, the Uttar Pradesh ATS arrested three active operatives from Lucknow. Along with these three, a minor has also been taken into custody. Security agencies have also seized a foreign-made pistol and live cartridges from the arrested individuals.
During the investigation, it emerged that all these accused were working under the direct instructions of a Pakistani handler known as 'Rana Bhai'. Rana Bhai had given them specific instructions to carry out target killings of Indian police personnel and Army jawans.
Security agencies have viewed this matter with extreme seriousness. Especially after taking action against several operatives involved in plans to target and attack police personnel in Punjab, security agencies have now intensified their surveillance and investigation. Such recruitment processes through social media have emerged as a major threat to the country's internal security.
