Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Kashmir Range, Sujeet Kumar, made a significant announcement on Wednesday. During a press conference held in Srinagar, he stated that currently, only one local listed terrorist is active in the Kashmir Valley. However, he warned that the threat from Pakistan-based terrorist handlers persists and security agencies are continuously receiving threat inputs.
Providing details of attacks during 2026, IGP Sujeet Kumar stated that local terrorists were behind the attack on a policeman in Anantnag and the subsequent attack on non-local labourers in Kulgam. He further added that foreign terrorists were also associated with this local terrorist. The police have identified Latif Ahmed as the terrorist involved in both these attacks. Posters of him have been put up across Srinagar city for his arrest.
When asked about the ease of movement for commuters while security convoys pass on the National Highway, the IGP stated that this matter would be discussed with senior officials. He clarified that an established procedure is in place considering past incidents and attacks. He further stated, "As I said, the risk exists and we are continuously receiving threat inputs. We are finding IEDs on the National Highway almost every second day."
On the question of the use of technology by terrorists, Kumar said that any technology used by terrorists or their organisations is on the police radar. However, he added that since such matters are of an operational nature, further details cannot be provided. On the other hand, following threat inputs received by the police and other security agencies, night checking and patrolling have been intensified in several areas of Srinagar.
During this press conference, the IGP also presented figures regarding actions against narcotics and financial fraud. According to a News18 report, the Jammu and Kashmir Police registered 1,651 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 1,941 accused between 1 January and 31 October 2026. More than 1,711 kg of narcotics were seized during this crackdown on drug trafficking.
As part of efforts to break the drug trafficking network and its financial structure, movable and immovable properties worth approximately ₹154 crore linked to NDPS cases have been seized or attached. During this investigation, the police froze 567 bank accounts containing approximately ₹1.71 crore and seized cash amounting to ₹1.1 crore.
Providing information on financial fraud cases, the IGP stated that between January and October 2026, the Kashmir Zone Police received 12,385 complaints of financial fraud involving a total amount of ₹54.66 crore. Through police intervention, approximately ₹7.48 crore, or 13.68 per cent of this total amount, was recovered or saved.
