Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday stated that the ongoing dispute within the Tata Group should be resolved by the stakeholders themselves and should not be brought into the public eye. Speaking at an event organised by the Financial Express in Mumbai, Sitharaman emphasised that this group is very important for the Indian economy, and therefore, this situation is not appropriate for a long-running dispute.
Sitharaman said, "This is a very important component of the Indian economy and therefore they should resolve it themselves through mutual understanding." She further added that this matter should not come out in the public domain in this manner. Treating the matter as sensitive, the Finance Minister stated that resolving this issue would require business decisions and mutual goodwill. However, she made no comment on whether the government would act as a mediator to facilitate talks between the two parties.
According to a Mint report, this dispute is primarily focused on the reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran as Chairman of Tata Sons and the potential stock market listing of the holding company. Tata Trusts, which holds a 65.9% stake in Tata Sons, is opposed to the listing, although trustees Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh have supported the idea. As per the Mint report, senior Supreme Court lawyer Darius Khambatta has decided not to accept a second term as a trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust. He had written a letter strongly criticising the decision taken by the Tata Sons board on 17 September to reappoint Chandrasekaran.
Speaking before her continuous tenth budget, Sitharaman indicated she was hearing concerns regarding the outflow of foreign portfolio funds, but she has not promised tax relief. She noted that the tax structure was the same as today in 2023-24 when the flow of funds was at record levels, but the situation has now changed. She said that the situation has changed, challenges have increased, and more foreign institutional investor (FII) funds have gone out, although foreign investors have now started returning.
Sitharaman stated that the government has strengthened the bond market in recent years, but now there is a demand to provide similar support to equity. She said she does not want to say more about this right now, but she recognises this voice and taxation is only one part of this problem. When asked what the government can realistically do to bring back foreign investors when US Treasuries offer attractive returns, she said they would first listen to all stakeholders and then decide on what steps to take.
Speaking on tax administration, the Minister said the government's approach is based on trusting taxpayers, citing faceless assessment and upcoming next-generation GST reforms as examples. She added that they will continue such reforms in the Finance Ministry. She also changed her opinion regarding private sector investment. She said that if asked a few years ago, she would have agreed that industries demand reforms but do not invest, but now she is seeing industries coming out. Confidence in investing in companies has increased after the September 2025 GST rate reforms.
Finally, she denied fears that consumer demand might decline due to slow wage growth despite an increase in corporate profits. Referring to October's GST collections, she said they were at their highest and India's consumption story will remain intact. She also rejected suggestions that these figures increased due to imports, as most imports were of raw materials necessary for exporters.
