A Rajasthani man in Guwahati, Assam, has leveled serious allegations against his wife and mother-in-law, claiming they pressured him to convert to Islam and forcibly performed circumcision against his will. The victim has filed a police complaint regarding the incident, based on which an investigation has been initiated.
According to an NDTV report, the complainant is identified as Akhil Kumar Chandak. He has filed an FIR at the Bhangagarh police station against his 24-year-old wife, Nurshika Begum, and 36-year-old mother-in-law, Nur Khatun. The police have so far arrested the mother-in-law, Nur Khatun, while his wife, Nurshika, is currently in Bengaluru. The police have asked her to join the investigation for questioning.
In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, Akhil Kumar Chandak stated that he met Nurshika in Delhi in 2019. Subsequently, they married through a court marriage in Assam and lived together for nearly three years. According to Chandak, there were no major disputes regarding religion during the initial period of their relationship.
However, Chandak claims that the situation changed when his wife's family and villagers discovered he was a Hindu. Nurshika had uploaded a photo on Facebook wearing sindoor, which brought their interfaith marriage to the attention of the villagers. Chandak alleges that the pressure to convert to Islam began only after this incident.
He further stated, "Initially, everything was normal. I stayed at their house for about ten days and her family treated me well. At that time, there was no discussion about religious conversion. The pressure started much later, when the villagers found out that she had married a Hindu man."
Describing the days of the incident, Chandak said that about six months ago, following an argument between him and his wife, Nurshika had gone to her village. Subsequently, his mother-in-law contacted him and asked him to come to resolve the family differences.
According to Chandak, he was asked to reach Jalukbari, where two unknown men picked him up in a vehicle. These men were introduced to him as relatives, after which they took him towards the TV Tower area.
Chandak has made the grave allegation that he was administered some intoxicating substance inside the vehicle, after which he was circumcised. He stated, "I was given an intoxicating substance there and my circumcision was performed inside the vehicle. I was not in a position to resist whatever was happening."
Additionally, he claimed that he was forcibly fed beef against his will. According to Chandak, this was also an attempt to compel him to accept Islam.
