A tragic incident has occurred in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district during an operation to curb illegal liquor smuggling. TI Dilip Puri of Khategaon police station died after being crushed by an Ayashar vehicle carrying illegal liquor on the Indore-Betul highway. The incident took place late Sunday night.
According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, TI Dilip Puri received information regarding illegal liquor smuggling at approximately 1:30 am on Sunday. Based on this information, he reached the Indore-Betul highway with his team to conduct an operation. Meanwhile, Nemawar police were also chasing the same Ayashar vehicle. When the police team reached the highway, the vehicle was seen parked near the divider.
When TI Puri asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, the driver attempted to drive the Ayashar vehicle forward by mounting the divider. During this, the rear wheels of the vehicle ran over TI Puri. He was seriously injured in the accident, sustaining severe injuries in several places and losing a significant amount of blood.
The injured Dilip Puri was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors administered CPR and other treatments for approximately 2 hours, but he could not be saved. Following the incident, the driver fled, leaving the vehicle at Sandalpur. The police have kept the vehicle at Sandalpur police station and have launched a search for the driver.
Upon learning of the incident, Dewas SP Aditya Mishra reached Khategaon early Monday morning at approximately 3:30 am. The family members of the deceased TI Puri have also reached Khategaon.
This incident comes at a time when serious questions have already been raised regarding the illegal liquor trade in Dewas district. According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, cases of deaths due to suspected poisonous liquor have emerged in Chandna and the nearby village of Binjana, located approximately 7 km from the Dewas district headquarters. Villagers claim that more than 13 people have died in these two villages in the last 20 days. Additionally, it has been reported that the eyesight of many people has also been affected.
According to villagers, the series of deaths began on 27 September. After consuming the liquor, people complained of stomach pain, dizziness, anxiety, and vomiting, and died within a few hours. Police investigations in this matter have revealed that the main accused, Ajay Rathore, manufactured spurious liquor at his home and subsequently supplied it by mixing it into liquor crates.
Due to this poisonous liquor case, administrative changes were also made in the district. The Collectors and SPs of Dewas and Sagar were changed. In Dewas, District Excise Officer Basanti Bhuriya and 3 other excise officers were also suspended. Now, with the death of a police officer while attempting to stop illegal liquor smuggling, the matter has become even more serious.
