Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tarunjit Singh Sandhu clarified on Monday that merely providing housing is not sufficient. During his visit to Narela, he warned that any form of negligence or apathy in providing basic amenities to the residents of Narela will not be tolerated. He made this statement during a visit to the Narela sub-city, where he inspected the completed DDA flats and reviewed infrastructure projects.
According to an NDTV report, this visit comes at a time when all 4,164 Low-Income Group (LIG) flats offered under the Delhi Development Authority's 'Awas Niwas Yojana 2026' were booked in just 10 days. The pace of these bookings was extremely rapid. On 20 October, 2,516 flats of the first batch were booked in just two hours, while on 29 October, another 1,648 flats were booked in only one hour.
These flats, located in Sectors G2 to G6 of Narela, were offered at a 25 per cent discount, with starting prices at approximately ₹14.95 lakh. However, Narela has been facing a major problem for years. Despite the availability of affordable housing, many DDA flat buyers faced difficulties due to poor connectivity and inadequate civic amenities.
In February 2025, residents here complained about irregularities in water supply, limited public transport facilities, and incidents of theft in the housing complexes. Some residents stated that they have to rely on private vehicles for daily commuting, while others reported cases of theft from vacant flats.
Lieutenant Governor Sandhu inspected the completed flats in Pocket 11 of Sectors A1 to A4. During this, he directed DDA officials to provide built-up space to the Delhi Police so that police stations, outposts, and police beats can be made operational at the earliest. He stated that a strong police presence would help control crime and drug-related activities, improve surveillance, and make the area safer.
He emphasised that, "Along with housing development, there must be essential public amenities, well-organized public spaces, and adequate security measures." During this visit, the LG reviewed the arrangements for basic amenities such as water supply, sewerage, sanitation, and public transport with the Delhi Jal Board, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Delhi Transport Department.
Despite the availability of housing in Narela, the question has arisen as to whether new buyers will have access to basic necessities like water, public transport, and security when they move there. The Lieutenant Governor has focused on all these issues to ensure that residents do not face difficulties.
