More than 100 students heading towards Connaught Place to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the electoral rolls were detained by the Delhi Police on Minto Road on Sunday. According to an NDTV report, this protest was organised by the student organisation 'Disha', which was demanding the cancellation of the SIR process.
As the students were marching from Minto Road towards Connaught Place, police personnel intercepted them midway and prevented them from proceeding. Subsequently, the police took them into detention. On the other hand, according to a Hindustan Times report, more than 50 protesters were briefly detained near Minto Road for violating restrictions. The police stated that after the rally concluded, some protesters moved towards Minto Road, where restrictions were in place.
Meanwhile, the India Block's 'Save Vote, Save Country' rally concluded peacefully, with thousands of people participating. More than 2,500 paramilitary personnel were deployed to maintain peace. According to the police, permission was granted only for the rally at Ramlila Maidan, and not for the march from Connaught Place to the protest site. A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that due to the large crowd, they did not stop the march but ensured that it proceeded peacefully.
Under the security arrangements, Ramlila Maidan was divided into eight sectors and 14 zones. Officers of the rank of DCP or Additional DCP were in charge of each sector, and ACP-rank officers were in charge of each zone. To assist them, there were at least 25 inspectors and personnel ranging from sub-inspectors to constables. Body-worn cameras and anti-riot measures were also implemented to prevent violence. Special Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Devesh Srivastava stated that the extensive arrangements made were successful and the large crowd was managed appropriately.
DCP (Central) Rohit Rajbir stated that door-frame metal detectors were installed to check participants. While some protesters claimed there were restrictions on the Delhi-Faridabad and Delhi-Noida borders, Delhi Police dismissed these allegations, stating that no such restrictions existed and movement had been permitted.
