For the first time in Gujarat, a strict drive has been launched by the Ahmedabad RTO against online cab and bike aggregator services. Showing a stern attitude against vehicles illegally running without transport registration, the authority has detained a total of 31 vehicles associated with Ola, UBER and Rapido. During this strict inspection, a fine of over ₹5 lakh has been levied for violation of rules.
According to TV9 Gujarati's report, during this special drive, it came to light that non-transport vehicles were being used commercially. According to the rules, registration as a transport vehicle is mandatory for any car or bike joining an aggregator platform. In addition, obtaining necessary registration and permission of the vehicle in the concerned state is also mandatory, but it was found that these legal provisions were being openly flouted.
During this operation, 10 private two-wheelers having white number plates were being used for commercial passenger service. Vehicles of these 10 bike riders have been detained and a fine of ₹1.25 lakh has been recovered from them. In addition, 21 four-wheeler cars registered in other states were also caught being used in illegal commercial activities in Ahmedabad. These cars are registered in other states including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
According to Sandesh's report, the Ahmedabad RTO has not only taken action against vehicle drivers, but has also tightened the screws on aggregator companies by fixing their direct responsibility. Official notices have been served by the RTO to all three major aggregator companies—Ola, Uber and Rapido—seeking an explanation as to for which services they hold recognition.
It has been warned by the authority that stricter steps will be taken in coming days against companies that operate passenger transport without valid permits and commercial registration. Through this entire operation, an attempt is being made to ensure that the lives of passengers are not put at risk in the name of cheap rides and all vehicles comply with legal rules.
