Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has launched a scathing attack on the Central government regarding the hike in government bus fares. He has clearly stated that if the Central government reduces the rising prices of petrol and diesel, the state government is fully prepared to reduce bus fares. He made this significant statement while speaking to reporters in Bengaluru today.
According to a report by Aaj Tak, the Chief Minister stated that the rising fuel prices are increasing a heavy financial burden on transport corporations. Referring to a critical situation, he said that last week, a situation arose where there were not enough funds available even to fill diesel in the buses. During these difficult times, the government had to provide financial assistance to the transport corporations.
DK Shivakumar further added that the state government is also providing free travel facilities in buses, but due to this, transport corporations are continuously facing losses. It is due to the increase in diesel prices that bus fares have been hiked by 2 rupees and 3 rupees in different phases.
Questioning those protesting against the bus fare hike, the Chief Minister asked why people did not protest when the prices of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas were rising continuously? He also mentioned the rise in prices of other essential commodities. Shivakumar said that the prices of medicines, pesticides, and other essential items have increased, and fertilizers and cement have also become expensive, but why did no one raise questions on these issues? He also questioned the difference between the purchase and selling prices of medicines.
Speaking on the state's economic situation and the problems of farmers, the Chief Minister said that there are 25 lakh farmers in the state who are struggling to earn their livelihood. The difficulties of farmers have increased further due to drought. In such circumstances, transport companies also need financial assistance so that they can continue their services. Appealing to convey the message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that if the Central government is imposing a cess on petrol and diesel, then steps should also be taken to reduce it. If fuel prices decrease, the state government can reduce bus fares accordingly, and there is no problem with that.
On November 4, the Karnataka government announced an increase in the bus fares of four government road transport corporations. According to Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh, the average fare of KSRTC has been increased by 23 percent, while the fare of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has been increased by approximately 32 to 35 percent. These new rates will come into effect from November 5. According to the government, rising fuel prices, expenses on employees, and the continuous losses of transport corporations are the main reasons behind this decision.
The Chief Minister reiterated that if the Central government cooperates in reducing fuel prices, the state government is ready to reduce bus fares. He emphasized coordination between the Centre and the State to reduce the financial burden so that both the general public and transport services can get relief.
