Amritsar North Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and retired IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has resigned from his membership of the Punjab Assembly. According to reports by Amar Ujala and Dainik Bhaskar, he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi today. Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has sent his resignation to the Assembly Speaker.
Regarding his resignation, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh wrote on the social media platform X that his greatest achievement is that he has eliminated the 'mai-baap culture' from politics. Addressing the people of Amritsar, he stated that he is resigning from his membership of the Punjab Assembly and will remain indebted to the love and respect received from the people until his last breath. He further added that, rising above the politics of street-level activities and ribbon-cutting, everyone should make collective efforts to make Punjab, which is gripped by drugs, fraud, gangsterism, and corruption, a progressive and leading state again.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh also stated that as an MLA, he has completed 90 per cent of his goal, which is the work an MLA is supposed to do. He also said that his sole objective is "Punjab First" and he will have no personal interest apart from this. In the Assembly, he had firmly raised issues of Amritsar such as water, sewerage, circuit house, Company Bagh, drains, Guru Nanak Dev University, Government Medical College, Sarup Rani College, and the Bargari sacrilege issues.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, a retired IPS officer of the 1998 batch Punjab cadre, had taken early retirement to join the Aam Aadmi Party and became an MLA from Amritsar North. He is originally a native of Bihar. In June 2025, he was suspended by the Aam Aadmi Party for 5 years on allegations of creating obstacles in the Punjab government's anti-drug campaign and engaging in anti-party activities. Since becoming an MLA in 2022, differences had emerged between him and the party as he raised questions on the government's functioning and issues such as sacrilege and the Behbal Kalan firing incident. In January 2023, he also resigned from the post of Chairman of the Assembly's Government Assurances Committee.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has announced joining the BJP after leaving the party, following which a total of 3 MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party have left the party in the last 2 days. According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, Samana MLA Chetan Singh Jauda Majra and Sanour MLA Harmeet Singh Pathan Majra also left the party on Sunday. All three MLAs will join the BJP in Delhi today. The Aam Aadmi Party will now demand the remaining two MLAs' memberships be cancelled by the Assembly Speaker.
Chetan Singh Jauda Majra has previously served as a minister in the Aam Aadmi Party government. Meanwhile, Harmeet Singh Pathan Majra had fled to Australia after a rape case was registered against him and was arrested by the police upon returning for investigation. These MLAs have stated that they left the party because Kejriwal's guarantees were not fulfilled. This departure comes after the Aam Aadmi Party released the first list of 40 candidates.
