To enhance the capability of the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). Under this contract, eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) will be built. These contracts were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh on November 2, 2026, at Kartavya Bhavan-2 in New Delhi.
According to this contract, GRSE will construct five corvettes, while the remaining three corvettes will be built by GSL. This project is an important milestone for India's indigenous warship design and construction capability. This is the first such project in which the designing of the ships will be done indigenously by the Indian Navy and constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) selected through a competitive process.
These new corvettes will be equipped with state-of-the-art capabilities, including advanced missiles, weapons, and sensor suites. These facilities will enable them to complete missions in air, surface, and sub-surface domains. The induction of these ships will significantly enhance the operational capability of the Navy to protect maritime trade routes, conduct anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare activities, strengthen coastal defense, littoral combat operations, and conduct maritime surveillance missions.
According to a PIB report, this project will give a boost to India's indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem and strengthen cooperation among Indian industrial partners, including DPSUs, private shipyards, and MSMEs. Over the next ten years, approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment are expected to be generated in shipyards and 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs. By promoting the use of Made-in-India materials and technology, this project is a major step towards achieving self-reliance in defense production.
