India has organised a special briefing on Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and maritime security for ambassadors and high commissioners of ASEAN countries. According to information provided by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the programme was conducted as part of the 'ASEAN-India Maritime Cooperation Year'.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on the social media platform X that on 4 November 2026, ambassadors and high commissioners of ASEAN were hosted at the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), where they were briefed on maritime domain awareness and maritime security.
According to a statement released by IFC-IOR on X, this visit by diplomatic representatives of ASEAN nations provided the delegation an opportunity to gain first-hand understanding of the centre's operational capabilities. During the visit, they were informed about the multinational ILO framework and the role played by the centre in the timely exchange of maritime information and coordinated response to incidents occurring at sea.
During the meeting, discussions primarily focused on emerging maritime security challenges, regional maritime awareness, and opportunities to strengthen collaborative MDA through closer engagement between India and ASEAN nations. According to IFC-IOR, these discussions reflect the growing convergence of maritime interests and a shared commitment to keeping the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) secure, stable, and safe. This entire process is aligned with India's 'Act East' policy and 'MAHASAGAR' vision.
The MAHASAGAR vision, which stands for 'Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions', was announced in 2025. This initiative emphasises the sustainability, resilience, and collective responsibility of the ocean's common resources. Against the backdrop of attacks on ships amidst ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe, India has placed special emphasis on maritime security and the safety of seafarers.
In this context, last month Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed India's commitment to 'ASEAN Centrality' at the 13th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) held in the Philippines. He stated that ASEAN Centrality is the foundation of India's Act East policy and Indo-Pacific vision. Rajnath Singh expressed hope that the ADMM meeting would help in increasing mutual trust, addressing emerging disruptions, and advancing defence cooperation among member countries. He added, "This forum is crucial for maintaining a resilient, secure, and prosperous region. I hope that today's ADMM meeting will help in strengthening our mutual trust, facing emerging disruptions, and advancing defence cooperation."
