Fourteen second-year MBBS students at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Kamareddy, Telangana, have been suspended for ragging junior students. This action was taken following a complaint lodged by new students with the National Medical Commission (NMC).
According to a report by The Hindu, the college principal, Dr. B. Valya, stated that the college received a complaint from the NMC based on representations made by the new students. Providing details about the circumstances of the incident, he mentioned that freshers and final-year students were accommodated in a common hostel. The second-year students, who did not reside in the college hostel, had entered an unauthorised area of the hostel and were caught within the college campus.
However, a student provided different details regarding the incident. According to that student, the complaint was filed because senior students expected junior students to greet them frequently with 'Good Morning'. Following the receipt of the complaint, the college's anti-ragging committee conducted an investigation and took disciplinary action against the involved students.
Under this action, 4 students have been suspended for 6 months, while another 10 students have been suspended for 4 months. Dr. Valya further added that the college is now preparing to submit an action-taken report to the NMC regarding the matter.
