In a major campaign launched by the police against the narcotics trade across the Kashmir Valley, 1,941 individuals have been arrested. During this stringent operation, more than 1,500 cases have been registered against persons involved in drug trafficking.
According to an NDTV report, assets worth ₹154 crore belonging to drug traffickers have been seized under this operation. Sujeet Kumar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Kashmir Zone, stated that approximately 1,711 kg of banned narcotics were seized during the action carried out across the valley.
As part of the financial investigation, the police have frozen 567 bank accounts and recovered cash amounting to approximately ₹10 crore during the operation. Additionally, to curb the production of narcotics, the police destroyed narcotic crops grown on 2,111 kanals of land.
Expressing concern over the drug menace, IGP Sujeet Kumar stated that drug addiction is a serious social challenge that requires collective intervention for a solution. He specifically appealed to mothers who are fighting to bring their children out of addiction to come forward to the police. He assured that the police would keep the identity of such mothers confidential and provide them with all possible assistance.
The police department further stated that affected families can contact any police station. The police department will provide full assistance in guiding them to de-addiction and rehabilitation centres.
Providing information on cybercrime on the occasion, Sujeet Kumar stated that the police have received 12,385 complaints this year, involving fraud exceeding ₹54 crore. Out of this amount, more than ₹7 crore has been recovered, while efforts are ongoing in collaboration with banks and other agencies to trace and freeze the remaining funds.
In cases of cyber fraud, 93 FIRs have been registered, of which seven cases are linked to mule bank accounts. The IGP warned the youth not to inadvertently get trapped in cybercrime networks. He requested the youth not to share their bank accounts, mobile numbers, or identity documents with persons involved in suspicious financial transactions.
