According to PIB, NITI Aayog and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH have signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the process of road freight decarbonisation. This agreement has been made under the 'Nationally Determined Contribution-Transport Initiative for Asia Phase II' (NDC-TIA II).
This agreement was made on 3 November 2026. NDC-TIA II is a regional initiative supported by the German government's International Climate Initiative (IKI). Partners such as World Resources Institute (WRI) India, International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) India, and Agora Energiewende are playing a crucial role in the implementation of this initiative.
Decarbonising road freight is a crucial component in leading India towards a sustainable, energy-efficient, and low-carbon transport system. However, the electrification of medium and heavy-duty freight vehicles is still in its nascent stages. The need for adequate charging infrastructure, innovative financial models, and an enabling regulatory framework in this sector is clearly evident.
Through this agreement, the collaboration between project partners has been formalised, with the primary objective of accelerating the process of reducing carbon emissions in India's road freight sector. This initiative will make a significant contribution to India's broader efforts to achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution targets and long-term climate goals.
