The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) successfully organized a grand multi-specialty medical camp in Rairangpur, in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Held between November 2 and 4, 2026, this 12th 'Operation Drishti' camp provided expert medical services free of charge to over 4,000 patients. During this camp, 365 successful surgeries were performed to restore eyesight. The location is the home district of the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, which makes this initiative even more significant.
On November 4, 2026, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja visited the camp. He interacted with the patients undergoing treatment and presented medicine kits to those who had undergone surgery. He praised the dedication of the medical teams, as the teams continued their services uninterrupted despite adverse weather conditions prevailing due to a cyclone. Experts in ophthalmology, cardiology, nephrology, dermatology, dentistry, and general medicine provided services under one roof at this camp.
The cardiology department examined over 400 patients, conducting 298 ECGs and 406 echocardiograms. During this, 29 patients were identified who required advanced treatments such as angiography, valve surgery, and device implantation. The nephrology department diagnosed over 400 patients and performed 341 ultrasounds. The dermatology department saw over 500 patients, while the dental team treated 221 patients. The general medicine department examined 339 patients.
Beneficiaries of the camp include 75-year-old Vishwanath, who had a complex cataract problem due to an old eye injury. The surgical team successfully performed a manual small-incision cataract surgery. Similarly, 60-year-old Sombari Gop, who had a small eye size and a severe cataract condition, also underwent a successful surgery. The main objective of this initiative is to provide advanced treatment in remote areas of the country where quality healthcare services are not easily available.
The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) is an important branch of the Indian Armed Forces. In the past, this organization has played a significant role during humanitarian work and disaster management. 'Operation Drishti' is a special initiative of theirs, aimed at providing expert ophthalmology and other medical facilities in underprivileged areas across the country. Through this camp, the people of Mayurbhanj received specialized treatment and a new lease of vision close to their homes, which demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces towards humanitarian service. Every patient was examined and treated on the spot, and they were also referred for further treatment when necessary.
