Railway Police have arrested a 36-year-old man from Kharagpur railway station in Paschim Medinipur district, from whom unaccounted cash amounting to ₹1.40 crore was recovered. According to a report by India Today, the apprehended person has been identified as Rahul Soni, a resident of Howrah. During the investigation conducted by the police, he was unable to present any valid documents to prove the legal source of such a large sum, leading the police to seize the entire amount.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at platform number 7 of the station. Railway police personnel noticed the suspicious movements of Rahul Soni, following which they stopped and questioned him. During the search, it was found that Soni was carrying two handbags and a blue-coloured backpack. When the police inspected the contents, bundles of ₹500 notes were found inside the bags.
The recovered cash was counted using a currency counting machine, which confirmed a total of ₹1.40 crore. This amount consisted of a total of 280 bundles of ₹500 notes. During interrogation, Soni told the police that he was transporting this cash from Tatanagar to Howrah.
The entire search operation was conducted in the presence of Abhijit Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of Kharagpur Government Railway Police Station (GRPS), and independent witnesses. To maintain transparency, the entire process was videographed through the e-Sakshya system. As Soni failed to provide legal documents, the police arrested him following the prescribed legal procedure.
According to the police, this arrest has been made under Sections 47 and 48(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), adhering to the guidelines of the Supreme Court and the National Human Rights Commission.
