Cases of cybercrime are continuously increasing in the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Between January and October this year, Indore police received approximately 7,000 complaints of cyber fraud. It has emerged that people suffered a total financial loss of ₹50 crore in all these cases. However, in the actions taken by the police, they have succeeded in recovering approximately ₹7 crore from this amount.
This important information was provided on Thursday by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotiya. He stated that cybercriminals are constantly adopting new and complex methods to deceive people. Currently, criminals are using digital arrest, APK files, and fake investment schemes. In addition, they are now taking the help of Artificial Intelligence to make the fraud more effective.
According to Rajesh Dandotiya, between January and October, the police were able to recover more than 350 social media accounts hacked by cybercriminals. Along with this, more than 450 fake social media accounts created by misuse of people's names and photos have been blocked.
The police officer explained in detail that cybercriminals are targeting people in different ways. Primarily, people are intimidated in the name of 'digital arrest' to extort money from them. In some cases, criminals send APK files to gain complete control of the victim's mobile phone. Apart from this, people are lured and defrauded under the pretext of investment, gaming, or 'work from home'.
Fraudsters win the trust of people to obtain their banking details and other private information. In many cases, financial loss was caused by gaining access to mobile phones. Dandotiya warned that cybercriminals are now making fraud methods more sophisticated with the help of Artificial Intelligence. They are attempting to deceive victims by mimicking the voices and faces of their relatives or acquaintances.
In this type of fraud, money may be requested in the name of help through the voice or video of a known person. Therefore, instead of immediately trusting such calls or videos coming from unknown numbers, it is very important to confirm by contacting the concerned person on their old and known number.
According to the report so far, police figures show that against the total loss of ₹50 crore caused by cyber fraud in Indore until October this year, the police have been able to return only ₹7 crore. People are being made aware by the police about the new methods of cybercriminals.
