The Postal Department of the Ministry of Communications has released a special souvenir sheet containing two commemorative stamps dedicated to breast cancer awareness at Dak Bhawan in New Delhi. Ms. Manisha Sinha, Director General of Postal Services, and Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, were present at this release event. Other senior dignitaries and officials from both ministries were also present on this occasion.
This initiative reinforces the commitment towards early diagnosis of the disease, timely treatment and better health outcomes in women. Addressing the gathering during the event, Ms. Manisha Sinha stated that commemorative stamps serve as an important medium to reflect the country's priorities and spread awareness beyond geographical boundaries. Emphasizing the importance of regular screening and early diagnosis in the fight against breast cancer, she encouraged families to support women in seeking timely medical advice. She also noted that postcards can serve as a meaningful medium for connection, encouragement and emotional support for women undergoing treatment.
Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, appreciated the work of the Postal Department for advancing the message of women's health through the collection of commemorative stamps. Highlighting the government's focus on preventive healthcare, she stated that regular screening for breast, oral and cervical cancer is an integral part of the national healthcare program. She emphasized the importance of strengthening awareness and encouraging women to undergo regular screenings for early diagnosis.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India, with approximately 2 lakh new cases emerging every year. The Government of India has strengthened population-based screening and early diagnosis initiatives under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Screening services are provided through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and Community Health Centres, while referral facilities and treatment are made available through district and tertiary care hospitals.
In collaboration with Fortis Hospital, the Postal Department also organized awareness sessions on breast cancer and cervical cancer. Along with this, interactive sessions on Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) were held at Dak Bhawan, aimed at promoting preventive healthcare awareness and knowledge of life-saving techniques. This special souvenir sheet is available for sale across India through Philately Bureaus and the e-Post Office portal.
