According to a report by Sandesh, under the intensive mega campaign being conducted by the police administration to make Ahmedabad city drug-free, 188 cases under the NDPS Act have been registered in the last 10 months. During this operation, the police have arrested 286 accused and seized contraband worth more than ₹42 crore.
This year's figures show a significant increase compared to 55 cases registered up to October last year. In the same period this year, there has been an increase of 133 cases, indicating a 240 per cent surge in the active operations of the police. To curb the menace of drugs, special Anti-Narcotic Cells have been made operational in all 48 police stations of the city. A total of 240 dedicated officers and police personnel are providing their services in these cells. Additionally, to maintain more meticulous surveillance, separate Anti-Narcotic Wings have also been established in Sector-1 and Sector-2.
Special teams from the Special Operation Group (SOG) and the Crime Branch are also jointly active to tighten the noose around drug mafias. During a specialized operation by the SOG, hybrid ganja worth more than ₹7 crore was seized. To nab major drug suppliers, a large joint operation was carried out in coordination with the Surat Crime Branch, in which investigation teams achieved great success in seizing drugs worth more than ₹25 crore. Through this joint action, an attempt is being made to break the inter-city drug racket.
To create public awareness on the subject of addiction in the city, 102 different programmes were organised. Furthermore, intensive rehabilitation work has been undertaken to bring more than 200 drug users back into the mainstream of society. The primary objective has been set to eradicate the city's drug network from its roots.
