The Indian Navy officially inducted the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) named 'Amini' on Thursday, 5 November 2026. This is the fifth of a total of eight such vessels built to strengthen India's coastal defence and underwater surveillance capabilities. According to an India Today report, Rear Admiral Gautam Marwah, Chief Staff Officer (Technical) of the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, accepted the warship on behalf of the Navy.
The vessel has been constructed by the Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). 'Amini' is notable as the 119th warship designed and built by the Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking, and the 81st vessel delivered directly to the Indian Navy. It is worth mentioning that GRSE had delivered three major naval platforms—Dunagiri, Sanshodhak, and Agray—on a single day on 30 March 2026, following which 'Amini' has now been delivered.
Specifically designed to operate in shallow coastal waters, 'Amini' will undertake sub-surface surveillance, search and attack missions, as well as anti-submarine warfare operations integrated with naval aircraft. The ship is equipped with an advanced combat management system, lightweight torpedoes, and anti-submarine warfare rockets, enabling it to detect, track, and counter underwater threats.
Furthermore, to protect against surface threats, the vessel is fitted with a 30 mm naval surface gun indigenously produced by GRSE. Regarding technical details, the warship has a length of 77.6 metres and a shallow draft of 2.7 metres, allowing it to operate easily in littoral waters. Its propulsion system consists of a combination of marine diesel engines and waterjets, providing better maneuverability in coastal areas.
The ship's integrated systems will allow it to coordinate with naval aircraft during anti-submarine missions, thereby increasing India's capability to monitor and respond to underwater threats near the coastline.
Meanwhile, GRSE continues to expand its naval shipbuilding portfolio. The shipyard is currently constructing 13 additional frontline naval platforms, including one Project 17A Advanced Stealth Frigate, the remaining three ASW-SWCs, four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, and five Next Generation Corvettes. Apart from naval projects, GRSE is building 36 commercial and specialised vessels, 13 of which are for export. Thus, the induction of 'Amini' further strengthens India's indigenous warship construction capability and maritime security framework.
