Bengaluru University is planning to establish placement cells in all its undergraduate and postgraduate colleges under its jurisdiction. The primary objective of this initiative is to provide employment opportunities to students. Through these cells, the university will organise placement drives and also provide necessary online and offline skill training for employment.
According to a report by The Hindu, the university already has an operational placement cell that organises annual placement drives. Placement officers have also been appointed in some affiliated colleges, but these officers are currently not active. There have also been allegations that due to this, students are unable to receive sufficient information regarding placements.
Sarvamangala, Director of the Pre-examination Coaching Centre and Placement Cell of Bengaluru University, stated that when students take admission to a college, they and their parents attach great importance to placements. However, in the current situation, the availability of jobs is limited and students lack accurate information about available jobs. Although placement activities are being conducted in the university, it is difficult to ensure that students of all affiliated colleges benefit from them. Therefore, the university will establish placement cells in all 274 government and private colleges under its jurisdiction.
The university has created a separate WhatsApp group including the principals and placement officers of all the colleges under its purview. Sarvamangala further added that they receive various updates regarding placements every day from government, corporate, and private organisations, which they share in this group, after which the principals and placement officers convey this information to the students.
Many companies provide training before hiring, as they do not find candidates with the required skills. Many companies come forward to provide skill training in both online and offline modes. Some organisations contact universities as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Additionally, some organisations also come forward to provide coaching for competitive examinations such as Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), Staff Selection Commission (SSC), banking, and the insurance sector.
The university also facilitates connections between company representatives and college principals. If a company wishes to visit a particular college to conduct placement activities, the university makes arrangements for the same. The university has organised 2 mega placement drives so far. Sarvamangala added that the concept of placement for 'Gen Z' is unique, so placement activities need to be prepared accordingly.
C. Shivaraaju, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told The Hindu that this initiative will strengthen the links between the industry and the academic world and increase the employability of students.
