Railways sets highest record for coal loading in October 2026

Indian Railways has set an all-time high record for coal loading in October 2026 as of October 18. A 22.5% growth in loading has been recorded compared to the same period last year. During this period, 87 more coal rakes were dispatched per day compared to October 2025, reflecting efforts to maintain a reliable supply of coal to thermal power plants across the country.

In the first six months of the financial year 2026-27, Indian Railways dispatched an average of 430 coal rakes per day for thermal power plants. This is a 7.1% increase compared to the same period last year. Compared to September 2025, there was a 14% increase in the pace of coal rake dispatch per day in September 2026.

Energy consumption has increased due to a rise in industrial production in some parts of the country and low rainfall. Amidst the increased demand for coal-based power generation, coal transportation is being carried out at a continuous pace.

Continuous dispatch of coal has helped in maintaining stable stocks in thermal power plants and has supported reliable power generation across the country. Indian Railways is working in close coordination with the Ministry of Coal for efficient dispatch of coal. It also coordinates with the Ministry of Power to maintain coal transportation and supply, ensuring sufficient stock in thermal power plants to meet the country's energy requirements.
