Turn kitchen wet waste into compost

If vegetable peels, fruit remains, and tea powder—the wet waste generated from the kitchen—are managed properly, they can be converted into compost. Through this method, the useful part of the waste is prevented from going into the dustbin, and organic matter suitable for adding to soil for plants is obtained. For domestic composting, a container with a lid that allows air circulation can be chosen. Keeping the container in a shaded area protected from rain makes its maintenance easier.

Adding dry leaves, small pieces of paper, or dry grass along with the wet kitchen waste helps in maintaining the moisture balance. It is not advisable for water to accumulate in the container or for air not to reach it; such conditions can cause foul smells. Periodically stirring the material allows air to penetrate inside. It is better not to add meat, oily food, and remains containing excessive salt to domestic compost, as they can create problems of odor and pests. The habit of segregating waste before discarding it prevents items like glass, metal, and plastic from mixing into the compost.

When the prepared compost is dark, crumbly, and has an earthy aroma, it can be mixed into garden soil in limited quantities. If the process is slow, there is no need to rush; check the balance of moisture, air, and material. Regular monitoring is necessary in composting, but it is not a complex task.
