The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is geared up to send its ambitious navigation satellite NVS-03 into space on October 30. Through this mission, the target is to make India's indigenous navigation system NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) services more accurate and uninterrupted. ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan gave this information during his visit to the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Tirumala.
Under this mission, with the help of the GSLV-F18 rocket, the NVS-03 satellite will be launched at 11:51 PM from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre located in Sriharikota. This rocket will place the satellite into its designated Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. Dr. Narayanan stated that under the guidance of India's Prime Minister, we are going to launch the navigation satellite NVS-03 using the GSLV-F18 launch vehicle on October 30 at 11:51 PM. This will be the fifth mission of this year, which also includes private launches.
NVS-03 is the third satellite of the next-generation navigation satellite system, which has been built to maintain continuity in the services of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) series. This satellite will have India's indigenous atomic clock along with the purchased atomic clocks. In addition, besides the existing L5/S signals, this satellite will also provide L1 signals. This system will provide precise Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services in an area of about 1500 kilometers from India's geographical boundary.
The NavIC system can be used for real-time tracking of trains, monitoring of vehicles, and navigation of boats and ships. This system will also prove very important in military security services. Mentioning the development of technology, Dr. Narayanan said that fifty years ago fishermen depended on stars and moon to find their way, but today technology and India's development have grown so much that now our navigation service will be available for the common man of the country. With this launch, ISRO will have four operational navigation satellites in orbit, one of which will feature an indigenous atomic clock.
NavIC system is extremely important for India because it helps reduce India's dependence on America's GPS system. Currently the NavIC system had weakened because the last atomic clock in the IRNSS-1F satellite failed. According to ISRO, on March 13, 2026, the on-board atomic clock stopped working. This satellite was launched in March 2016 and had completed its 10-year designated mission life on March 10, 2026. However, it will remain operational in orbit to provide one-way broadcast messaging services. According to a report by Business Standard, the launch of NVS-03 will help restore independent positioning on NavIC, as currently only three satellites are operational against the requirement of four satellites to provide navigation services.
This mission is notable as the 20th flight of GSLV. Other launches of GSLV this year include the PSLV-C62 mission with the EOS-N1 earth observation satellite on January 12, 2026, and the EOS-05 mission by GSLV-F17 on September 4. Earlier, on January 29, 2025, ISRO launched NVS-02, the last satellite of the NVS series, which was the 100th landmark launch from Sriharikota. However, due to a valve defect, ISRO could not perform the orbit-raising operations designated for NVS-02. NVS-03 will now take the place of older satellites and strengthen the capabilities of NavIC once again.
