Google offers voluntary resignations; no immediate impact on India

As part of a strategy to cut costs and invest more in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), tech giant Google has announced voluntary buyout packages for employees. According to a report by ABP Asmita, the primary objective behind this significant decision is to redirect the company's resources towards future technology. Google's parent company, Alphabet, has confirmed this programme to Reuters. Under this scheme, employees are being offered attractive packages to leave the company voluntarily.

According to information provided by a Google spokesperson, this voluntary exit programme was initiated in the year 2025. Initially started on a limited scale, the scheme was expanded globally in June 2025. Currently, the benefit of this buyout programme has been extended to employees operating in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. The company aims to manage costs by reducing its employee headcount in these countries.

The relief for Indian employees is that, at the current stage, Google's employees operating in India have not been made part of this buyout offer. However, uncertainty remains regarding what the impact will be in the future. Currently, there appears to be no direct impact on Indian employees, but experts are concerned about the long-term effects of this decision taken at a global level. Amidst these major changes occurring in the tech sector, the possibility of any future impact on India cannot be ruled out.

On the other hand, a similar strategy has also been adopted by Microsoft. Microsoft has offered buyout contracts to approximately 60,000 employees. Notably, Indian employees have also been included in Microsoft's offer. Microsoft is also taking these steps to accelerate its expansion in the field of Artificial Intelligence. In this manner, the decisions taken simultaneously by two large tech companies have become a subject of discussion in the tech world.

The impact of this entire sequence of events has also been seen in the stock market. Wall Street investors and analysts have expressed concern over the excessive expenditure being incurred by large tech companies behind Artificial Intelligence. Due to these concerns, a decline has been noted in Alphabet's share prices. Investors fear that such large investments in Artificial Intelligence could impact the company's profits. The way companies are resorting to layoffs or buyouts to reduce costs is creating an atmosphere of instability in the market.
