According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), total vehicle retail sales in October 2026 witnessed a year-on-year (YoY) decline of 24%. With this decrease, total sales stood at 31,72,466 units. The primary reason for this decline is the 'high base effect' due to the strong demand observed during the same period last year.
However, retail sales in October showed an increase of 25.05% compared to September 2026. Compared to the exceptional figures of last year, a decline was noted in the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments. Two-wheeler sales fell by 28.35% and passenger vehicle sales decreased by 14.23%. A total of 5,07,768 units of passenger vehicles were sold, which is 14.23% lower than October 2025, but 18.86% higher than September. Two-wheeler sales stood at 23,21,419 units, marking a year-on-year decline of 28.35%.
On the other hand, growth was observed in some segments. Commercial vehicles grew by 2.29%, three-wheelers by 3.97%, tractors by 3.10%, and construction equipment by 22.07%. Commercial vehicle sales reached 1,15,140 units, which is 2.29% higher year-on-year and 11.19% higher than September. Despite the high base, this has been the best October ever for commercial vehicles. Heavy trucks contributed significantly to this growth, with HCVs increasing by 28.95% and MCVs by 21.16%, while LCVs saw a decline of 9.57%. Dealers attribute this growth to consistent freight movement, infrastructure implementation, and the hauling of coal, iron ore, and e-commerce cargo. As commercial vehicles are least dependent on festivals, they reflect the true state of the economy.
According to FADA President Sai Giridhar, this year-on-year decline is merely statistical. He stated, "Last October, both Navratri and Diwali coincided, and pent-up demand emerged following the GST 2.0 rate cut on September 22, 2025. This year, Navratri was in October, while Dhanteras and Diwali fall in November." He added that if viewed correctly, this was the second-largest October on record, with commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, and tractors recording their best October. The 25% sequential jump over September is the true measure of festive demand.
Sai Giridhar further mentioned that the decline was primarily seen in regions more dependent on Diwali. Rural two-wheeler sales declined by 33.97%, while urban areas saw a drop of 20.77%. A decline was also observed in Northern markets. In his view, demand has not vanished but has shifted forward due to the festive calendar, which will be reflected in November's figures.
Retail sales of Electric Vehicles (EVs) touched a peak with 3.55 lakh units, increasing by 44.88% year-on-year. Consequently, EV penetration has risen to approximately 11.5%, up from 6% a year ago. Three-wheelers, which are now nearly 63% electric, recorded their best October. In passenger vehicles, the use of alternative fuels has again surpassed petrol as customers shift towards CNG, hybrid, and electric options. Sai Giridhar described these as encouraging structural signals for Indian auto retail. All these details have been released as per a report by The Hindu.
