A heartbreaking incident has come to light in Jagatpur village, located in the Chibramau area of Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district, where a 35-year-old man burnt his 30-year-old wife alive due to suspicion of her having an extramarital affair. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, in which the accused husband, Sukhbir Singh alias Monu, tied his wife Sonam to a chair, poured petrol on her, and set her on fire.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the incident took place in Jagatpur village, situated 40 km away from the district headquarters. Local residents became alert when flames were seen rising from inside the house and immediately informed the police and the fire brigade. When firefighters entered the house, the scene was horrific. The fire was so intense that Sonam's body was completely burnt to a skeleton. It took the fire brigade team nearly one and a half hours to bring the fire under control.
According to reports by Aaj Tak and Hindustan Times, Sukhbir Singh and Sonam had entered into a love marriage 11 years ago. Sukhbir used to work as a private labourer in Hisar, Haryana, and had returned to the village about 15 days before this incident. According to villagers, Sukhbir suspected that Sonam had a love affair with a local youth, due to which he had started keeping a watch on her. He once caught Sonam talking to the youth on a mobile phone, leading to continuous quarrels between the husband and wife for the last two days.
The dispute escalated to such an extent that a meeting was held at the Sikandarpur police outpost two days before the murder to reach a settlement between the two parties. After discussions that lasted for hours, Sonam agreed to live with her husband and give up the alleged relationship. However, that same evening, the youth consumed poison and was admitted to a local clinic as his condition deteriorated, where he survived after treatment.
On the day before the incident, another quarrel broke out between the husband and wife. On Thursday morning, Sukhbir left the house in anger and returned half an hour later with a bottle of petrol. He tied Sonam to a chair, poured petrol on her, set her on fire, and fled the scene. According to Hindustan Times, Sukhbir fled with the couple's two children—a 7-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter—while the Aaj Tak report states the children's ages as a 7-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter.
Kapil Dubey, SHO of Chibramau, visited the spot and stated in the preliminary investigation that the wife was tied and burnt, and the primary reason appears to be suspicion regarding her character. He confirmed that a complaint had been lodged at the police outpost two days prior and a dispute had occurred. Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinod Kumar of Kannauj also visited the village. According to the Aaj Tak report, the SP confirmed that the accused Sukhbir Singh has been arrested by the police, whereas the Hindustan Times report states that the accused is still absconding and the police are conducting raids to find him.
This incident has created a sensation across the entire area. A husband who had settled down through a love marriage brutally murdered his wife, leaving two small children without a mother. The police are currently proceeding with further legal action in this matter.
