According to a Business Standard report, preparations are underway by NTPC, the country's largest power generation company, to add 58 gigawatts of capacity to reach 149 gigawatts of power capacity by the year 2032. NTPC and NTPC Green Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh gave information regarding this while addressing the KPMG Enrich 2026 event on Tuesday.
Gurdeep Singh stated that new capacities will be added from various sources including renewables. During the session, he also presented NTPC's plans for the nuclear sector. At present, the total power generation capacity of the company is 91 gigawatts and it will reach 149 gigawatts by 2032.
Gurdeep Singh noted that the company has received very clear guidelines and work is now progressing rapidly to increase nuclear capacity. Out of the 250 gigawatts capacity targeted for the year 2037, about 30 gigawatts is planned for nuclear energy. According to the report, the feasibility study for the proposed nuclear capacities in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha has been completed and more locations will be explored in other states as well.
Speaking further about the country's domestic power sector, the chairman stated that it is showing resilience against current global level challenges. Despite ongoing global turmoil, no major spike has been seen in electricity prices in India, which has been witnessed in other parts of the world. He also noted that electricity demand increased by 21 percent in the month of October this year and demand is increasing every month.
Operating under the Union Ministry, NTPC is the country's largest power generation company which alone fulfills one-fourth of the country's energy demand.
