Democrats win US midterm elections, Republican Party suffers historic defeat

The Democratic Party has achieved unprecedented success in the US midterm elections, establishing control over both houses of Congress. Democrats have secured 5 seats in the Senate and won more than half a dozen districts in the House of Representatives. These results represent a historic defeat for the Republican Party, as Democrats achieved significant victories even in areas considered strongholds of the Republicans. The victory was so substantial that the Democrats' win was announced even before midnight.

These election results are considered a direct protest against the second term of US President Donald Trump. Voters showed heavy dissatisfaction regarding the rising cost of living, tariff policies, and increasing fuel prices due to the war against Iran. According to the AP Voter Poll, nearly two-thirds of voters believe that Trump's policies have worsened the economic condition of the US. In the survey, 43 per cent of voters stated they voted to express opposition to Trump, while only 16 per cent voted in support of Trump. 28 per cent believed that Trump's policies improved the economy, while 8 per cent reported no significant impact.

Donald Trump reacted to the Republican Party's defeat on the social media platform 'Truth Social'. He wrote, "I was not on the ballot. If I were on the ballot, we would have had a landslide victory!" He also added that people did not like it when they had to pay more dollars for fuel. However, in a conversation with the New York Times, he said he is ready to accept the results and will work with the Democratic Party. In a conversation with Fox News, he stated that he does not view these results as a setback to his term.

With Democrats gaining control of Congress, they will now have more power regarding lawmaking, investigations, and funding. Trump will retain veto power, which will allow him to block laws passed by the Democrats, but Democrats can also create obstacles against Trump's decisions. Democrats can now initiate congressional investigations into Trump's controversial decisions and the 'economic benefits' gained by his family members after returning to the White House. Additionally, they can use the Congressional Review Act to overturn the reductions made to emission regulations by the Trump administration.

The results of this election have also had a profound impact on the global market and India. As the US is a major market for goods for India, any change in tariff policy will directly affect Indian exporters. A Democratic majority could bring more discussion on tariffs, healthcare, and immigration rules. These results are particularly important for H-1B visa holders, as Democrats may increase scrutiny of immigration rules, although they will not immediately scrap proposals such as the $1,00,000 fee for new H-1B visa applications announced last September.

The impact of this change was also seen in the stock market. There was a surge in clean energy stocks, with First Solar shares rising by 7% and Sunrun by 6.1%. On the other hand, stocks related to data centers and AI saw a decline. Elon Musk's SpaceX shares fell by 5.2% and Tesla shares by 4.9%. A decline was also noted in the shares of defense contractors such as Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. Brent crude prices also declined, and a decrease was seen in the value of the dollar. The market showed improvement with a 3% rise in Dow Jones.
