Niranjan S. Shah, a native of Pratapnagar village in Gujarat's Narmada district, has been honoured in the USA for his contributions to the fields of engineering and public service. On the occasion of the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the alumni community of Sardar Patel University honoured him as a 'Distinguished Alumnus'. This recognition was bestowed in consideration of his career spanning over five decades and his dedication to society.
According to a report by Sandesh, he has also received recognition from high levels within the US government. Former US President Joe Biden sent a letter honouring Niranjan Shah and recalling the legacy of Sardar Patel. Additionally, Alexi Giannoulias, the Secretary of State of Illinois, issued a proclamation noting Sardar Patel's birth anniversary and Niranjan Shah's contributions. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also issued a proclamation praising Shah's contribution to the city's development.
Niranjan Shah was raised in Pratapnagar village under modest economic circumstances. He obtained his engineering degree in 1967 from Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya (BVM) in Vallabh Vidyanagar. Apart from his family, the villagers also provided financial assistance for his studies. Recalling a memory, Shah stated that when he was leaving the village for his studies, more than 200 people came to the bus stand to bid him farewell, and people gave him blessings along with 1, 2, or 5 rupees according to their capacity. According to Shah, the role of the villagers has been extremely important in his success.
After moving to the USA, he built his career in Chicago and co-founded Globetrotters Engineering Corporation in 1974. For the last five decades, his company has worked on several major infrastructure projects in Chicago, including O'Hare International Airport, John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, McCormick Place, Navy Pier, and the Deep Tunnel. For the Deep Tunnel project, his company was presented with the 'Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award' by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Beyond engineering, he has played a significant role in public service. During the tenure of former President Bill Clinton, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, which received approval from the US Senate. He has also held responsibilities at the National Institute of Building Sciences. He has received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from the Government of India, which was presented to him by the then President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Niranjan Shah stated that if his life journey inspires even 10 youths to believe in their dreams, it would be a true tribute to Sardar Patel. In his view, creating new opportunities for society rather than personal success is the way to keep Sardar Patel's thoughts alive. His daughter, Smita Shah, is also working to strengthen relations between India and the USA and serves as the Chairperson of the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International.
