The Tamil Nadu government, considering the demands of candidates appearing for competitive examinations, has announced a five-year increase in the upper age limit for direct recruitment to government jobs. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has issued necessary orders in this regard. This decision will directly benefit thousands of competitive exam candidates across the state.
This increase made in the age limit will apply as an additional benefit over and above the relaxations currently available for backward classes, most backward classes, scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes. According to the government statement, this increase in the age limit will remain in effect for a period of five years starting from October 30, 2026.
Detailing the new age limit for various examinations, the report stated that for general category candidates appearing for the Group 1 Civil Services examination, the age limit has been increased from 32 years to 37 years. Meanwhile, for reserved category candidates, this limit has been increased from 37 years to 42 years.
Important changes have also been made for the Group 2 and 2-A examinations. For general category candidates, the age limit has been increased from the previous 30 years to 35 years. There will now be no upper age limit for reserved category candidates in the Group 2 and 2-A examinations. Additionally, for candidates appearing in Group 4 examinations, the age limit has also been increased from 32 years to 37 years.
Ever since assuming power, the government led by Chief Minister Vijay has continued to implement various welfare schemes and measures. Along with this decision to increase the age limit in government jobs, the government has also taken other important decisions. These include increasing the free electricity limit for eligible domestic consumers from 100 units to 200 units every two months.
For the safety of women, the government has established a dedicated women's security force. Furthermore, orders have been issued to close 717 TASMAC liquor shops located near educational institutions, religious places, and transportation points. In the education sector too, the government has undertaken important initiatives, which include an expanded breakfast scheme for school students and a laptop distribution program for college students.
Major relief measures have also been taken by the government in the agriculture sector. A waiver of up to ₹75,000 has been announced for cooperative agricultural loans, and additional relief will be provided for loans up to ₹1 lakh. This comprehensive loan waiver scheme is set to benefit 13.34 lakh farmers.
Other welfare schemes of the government include a scheme to provide a 1-gram gold ring to every newborn born in government hospitals and a scheme to provide marriage assistance to eligible women. Chief Minister Vijay's government completed 100 days in power on August 17. On this occasion, the government released a report titled “100 Days of Governance – A Government for Generations”, outlining the achievements of the administration's initial months.
