Keeping the Diwali festival in view, the Chennai Division of Southern Railway has increased security and surveillance at railway stations and trains. Strict measures have been taken by the Railways to maintain security amidst the increasing rush of passengers due to the religious festival. During this period of the religious festival, passengers have been requested not to carry firecrackers, flammable substances, or any other hazardous items in trains.
As there is heavy crowding of passengers during this period of the religious festival, carrying firecrackers within the premises of trains or stations can create a serious risk of fire. Railway officials have warned that this could put the lives of both passengers and railway employees at risk. If any person violates these rules, legal action will be taken under the Railways Act, 1989. As per the applicable provisions of this Act, the guilty person may face imprisonment for up to three years, a fine, or both.
According to a report by The Hindu, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has intensified inspections using explosive detection devices and sniffer dogs to prevent the transportation of prohibited and hazardous materials. Additionally, CCTV surveillance has also been strengthened. Special teams have been deployed to prevent passenger-related crimes and to immediately address security issues.
Additional RPF personnel have been deployed at entry and exit points, platforms, and other crowded areas to regulate queues, manage crowds, and enhance security. Extremely strict surveillance is being maintained at major stations such as Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Perambur, Tambaram, Chennai Beach, Tambaram, and St. Thomas Mount.
Railway officials have appealed to passengers to travel only with valid luggage and to immediately report if any suspicious luggage or activity is noticed. Passengers can inform the RPF, Government Railway Police (GRP), ticket checking staff, or station authorities. For any kind of assistance, passengers can also contact the railway helpline number 139.
