The Gross Value Added (GVA) of India's manufacturing corporate sector witnessed an increase of 9.28% during the financial year 2024-25. According to the latest Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, there was a rise of 3.45% in the number of operating factories and 7.57% in total employment.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, the manufacturing corporate sector dominated the country's registered industrial production, contributing more than 89% to the total GVA. The survey revealed that the gross value of plant and machinery in the registered manufacturing sector increased by 7.25% compared to the previous year. Additionally, there was an increase of 6.59% in net value added per operating factory and 2.25% in GVA per person engaged.
In terms of employment, five major industries—including food products, textiles, basic metals, motor vehicles, and wearing apparel—accounted for more than 41% of total manufacturing employment during 2024-25. Geographically, the five states contributing the most to manufacturing GVA include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh, which collectively contributed more than 54% of the national total.
The survey indicates that the concentration of capital and production is higher in large factories. Units with an investment of ₹10 crore or more in plant and machinery constituted 15.84% of operating factories, but their share in total fixed capital was 87.42%, in employment 59.66%, in gross output 76.82%, and in net value added 78.07%.
In contrast, factories with investments up to ₹5 crore constituted 78.69% of operating units. However, their contribution to fixed capital was 10.55%, in the number of persons engaged 34.32%, in total output 19.24%, and in net value added 17.61%.
A similar picture emerged when classified based on output. Units producing more than ₹10 crore constituted 47.63% of operating factories, but they contributed 98.10% to total output and 97.87% to net value added. These units were responsible for 95.55% of fixed capital and 88.78% of employment.
The Ministry has released unit-level data and metadata along with Volume I and summary results of the factory sector for ASI 2024-25, presenting a detailed picture of investment, employment, and production in the registered manufacturing sector. These publications supplement the factsheet released on September 30, 2026. Volume I contains detailed statistics as per the National Industrial Classification (NIC), 2008, while the summary publication presents key indicators of industrial performance across states and union territories.
Factories registered under this survey include certain establishments producing bidis and cigars, electrical utilities, and eligible establishments with 100 or more employees. All this data has been collected electronically through a dedicated web portal.
ASI has been the primary source of industrial statistics for the organised manufacturing sector. It provides information on capital formation, employment, wages, input costs, production, and value addition. Its findings are used in the compilation of National Accounts Statistics at both national and state levels.
