According to a Sandesh report, the health and food department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has become active to ensure that there is no tampering with the health of citizens during festivals like Diwali and Bestu Varas.
In this regard, various teams of the health department simultaneously raided the units of ghee manufacturers and wholesale traders at Madhupura Market, known as the city's main wholesale trading center for edible oil and ghee, and conducted intensive checks.
Immediate on-the-spot testing of ghee samples was initiated by the authorities using modern 'rapid test kits' right at the site. During this operation, the quality of about 25 different well-known and local brands of ghee available in the market was checked, causing a scramble in the trading lanes.
Food safety officers conducted the Baudouin Test right on the spot using chemical solutions by mixing hydrochloric acid (HCL) and furfural solution in the ghee. If there is adulteration of oil or vanaspati in the ghee, the color of the mixture turns red.
According to Sandesh, no serious adulteration came to light in the primary rapid tests conducted on the spot in the units of Madhupura, and the primary samples passed. Detailed inspection of the packaging and loose stock of 25 different brands of cow and buffalo ghee available in the market was also carried out.
