A special discussion was held regarding how earnings are generated in the field of film production and the challenges faced in the current era. According to a report by BBC Gujarati, the discussion featured Vishal Ramchandani, CEO of Excel Entertainment, Vipul Amrutlal Shah of Sunshine Pictures, Jackky Bhagnani of Pooja Films, and South Indian filmmaker Dil Raju. All these producers have delivered successful films such as the Don franchise, The Kerala Story, and Coolie No. 1. Dil Raju's upcoming projects include Akshay Kumar's SVC60 and the Salman Khan-Nayanthara film SVC63.
Vishal Ramchandani, CEO of Excel Entertainment, stated that this is an exciting time for making films. He debunked the notion that OTT platforms have driven audiences away from cinema halls. According to Ramchandani, films of various languages, budgets, and genres are finding audiences in theatres. However, he added that work can no longer rely solely on pre-sales; producers must have greater faith in their content and story. If the film is worth watching, the audience will certainly come.
Vipul Amrutlal Shah of Sunshine Pictures believes that filmmaking has always been difficult because there is no fixed formula for audience preference, necessitating a constant search for new stories. He mentioned that the challenge is greater for Sunshine Pictures as they work on new subjects rather than sticking to a single genre. With the increase in entertainment options due to OTT, it is now essential to find stories with which the audience can relate.
South Indian filmmaker Dil Raju stated that challenges have increased significantly in the current times. Budgets for films have risen and options like OTT are available, making it the biggest challenge to bring people to the theatre for more than two hours. For this, the film's content must be strong enough to draw viewers to the theatre and keep them engaged until the end.
Producer Jackky Bhagnani noted that audience tastes are constantly changing and marketing costs have increased significantly, putting pressure on budgets. In his view, it is not enough for a producer to simply make a good film; the primary challenges are the selection of the right story, its presentation, control over expenses, and ensuring the film reaches the appropriate audience.
Speaking on earnings and business models, Vishal Ramchandani said that his primary business is based on content creation, including feature films and web series. His goal is to produce three feature films and two series every year. He is now working on new opportunities such as music labels, Intellectual Property (IP), merchandising, and international collaborations. He cited 'Mirzapur: The Movie' as his recent major success.
Vipul Shah mentioned that he conducts deep research and preparation before starting a film. He reviews various financial models and commences production only when all data is appropriate. He emphasised that filmmaking is a collective effort, and a good film is created only when the entire team, from the spot boy to the writer, director, and actor, works as a single unit.
Explaining the business model of his production company, Sri Venkateswara Creations, Dil Raju said that their success depends on the selection of the right story and director, strict control over the budget, and the proper presentation of the film.
