Social Media Controversy Over Sita's Warrior Persona in Ramayana Film

The film 'Ramayana', starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Yash, has been released in cinemas. While the film is receiving considerable praise for its story and the performances of the actors, a controversial scene has become a subject of debate on social media. In this scene, actress Sai Pallavi, playing the role of Sita, is shown fighting demons alongside Lord Ram in the forest. This scene has sparked significant resentment among viewers, who consider it a serious tampering with mythological facts.

According to a report by Aaj Tak, social media users are reacting sharply to this scene. One user, calling the film 'Scamyana', stated that this is yet another betrayal of the Ramayana. Users argue that the scriptures clearly mention that when Lord Ram fought the army of 14,000 demons led by Khara and Dushana, he had sent Mata Sita and Lakshman safely away from the battlefield. Lord Ram faced the entire army single-handedly. Another user commented that the description of that war in the Ramayana is extremely horrific and brutal, where Lord Ram was drenched in the blood of demons. At that time, Mata Sita's persona was extremely gentle and feminine, and Lord Ram would never have allowed her to enter the battlefield.

Many have raised questions regarding whether filmmakers can alter mythological tales at their own will. People believe that the task of defeating the army of 14,000 demons, sent by Shurpanakha's brother Khara for revenge, was accomplished by Lord Ram alone. Altering this fact in the film to show Sita fighting alongside Ram is seen as contrary to the fundamental principles of the original story. Discussions continue on social media as people express their dissatisfaction.

Amidst this controversy, the question arises as to what is written in the actual texts. According to references in the Valmiki Ramayana, Mata Sita did not participate in any demon-war during the 14 years of exile. According to that text, Lakshman defeated Shurpanakha, and subsequently, Ram and Lakshman fought the demons together. Specifically, Lord Ram fought and emerged victorious against the entire army of Khara and Dushana single-handedly.

However, as another aspect of this controversy, the 'Adbhut Ramayana' has also been mentioned. In this text, Sita is depicted as an extremely powerful form of Goddess Shakti. According to the Adbhut Ramayana, when Lord Ram is defeated in the war against Sahastra Ravana, Mata Sita assumes the fierce form of Mahakali and destroys the demons herself. In this manner, Sita is depicted as a warrior in the context of the Adbhut Ramayana. Nevertheless, the way this scene has been presented in the current film is not acceptable to a large section of the audience.

Valmiki Ramayana is one of the two main epics of Sanskrit literature. Composed by Sage Valmiki, this text describes the life and ideals of Lord Ram. Traditionally, this text is considered the main foundation of Indian culture and religion, in which Sita is depicted as the ideal Indian woman and a symbol of endurance. Historically, there has been a tradition of presenting Sita's character with gravity and modesty, which is why people's religious sentiments are hurt whenever changes are made to her character.
