According to a report by The Hindu, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to constitute district-level advisory committees to hear grievances of sales tax taxpayers and resolve issues relating to sales tax administration at the district level. These committees will be headed by the respective district collectors.
This decision was taken following a meeting held recently under the chairmanship of Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration D. Logesh Tamilselvan. These committees will meet once in three months to discuss issues relating to sales tax and take necessary steps to redress grievances raised by taxpayers.
These committees will have the Joint Commissioner (State Tax), Deputy Commissioner (State Tax) [excluding Headquarters], Deputy Commissioner (Intelligence), members of the State-level Sales Tax Advisory Committee from the respective district, Superintendent or Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner (Central Tax) and General Manager of the District Industries Centre as members. In addition, the ex-officio members will include one Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the respective district, two representatives each from farmers, industries and traders (wholesale and retail traders), as well as one representative each from cooperative societies, cottage industries and consumer forum.
The Deputy Commissioner (State Tax) posted at the district headquarters of the respective district will function as the secretary of this committee. Joint Commissioners (State Tax) of all divisions have been instructed to constitute these committees in their respective districts by November 30. These committees will function until November 30, 2029.
It has also been directed by the Minister that the first meeting of these committees be convened by December 15.
