The 'KG to PG' free education scheme implemented by the Odisha government is proving to be a game-changer for higher education in the state. According to a BusinessLine report, this scheme has resulted in 14,758 more students enrolling in regular undergraduate courses during the current academic session compared to the previous year. State Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, while providing this information after a review meeting, stated that the main objective of this scheme is to make education accessible to eligible families and to strengthen access to higher education across the state.
According to the information provided by the Minister, a total of 1,78,937 students have enrolled in regular undergraduate courses in the current academic year, compared to 1,64,179 in the previous year. The admission figures in the state's aspirational districts, in particular, have been highly encouraging. Kalahandi district led with an enrollment rate of 99.09 percent, while Koraput district ranked second with 98.82 percent. Additionally, significant enrollment was also observed in Balangir (95.57 percent), Malkangiri (95.37 percent), and Nuapada (94.64 percent) districts.
The official name of this scheme is the 'Gyanodaya Shikshan Samriddhi' scheme. This scheme provides free education from nursery to postgraduate level, charging no fees of any kind to students in government educational institutions. The Minister emphasized that this initiative is helping to realize the vision of 'Education for All and Higher Education for All'. In a meeting held in Bhubaneswar on Friday, the Minister, besides the progress of the scheme, also discussed filling vacant teaching and non-teaching positions in colleges and universities, recruitment examinations conducted by the State Selection Board, and the implementation of PM-USHA projects.
To further strengthen the educational infrastructure, the government has also taken major decisions at the administrative level. New principal positions have been created in 48 government degree colleges of the state. Following this decision, sanctioned principal positions are now available in all 66 government colleges of the state, which were previously limited to only 18 colleges. Furthermore, 262 new positions have been created in 17 state universities to improve administrative arrangements. The Minister assured that the process of filling 1,819 vacant teaching positions in colleges and universities is currently underway and will be completed at the earliest.
During the review meeting, the Minister gave strict instructions to the concerned officials for the effective implementation of departmental schemes. He emphasized completing all ongoing projects within the stipulated timeframe. This initiative of the Odisha government is opening doors to higher education for students in the backward and aspirational regions of the state. The Minister clarified that the government is continuously striving to address the shortage of infrastructure and human resources in the education sector so that more students can benefit from higher education in the future.
The 'Gyanodaya Shikshan Samriddhi' scheme is an ambitious program of the Odisha government, aimed at relieving students from economically weaker sections of the burden of education. Under this scheme, students enrolling in government educational institutions do not have to pay tuition fees or any other academic fees, which was expected to reduce the drop-out rate and increase the enrollment rate, which is now turning into reality.
