The Karnataka State Cabinet has approved an additional amount of ₹1,118 crore to complete a 134 km long road project. This information was provided by Krishna Byre Gowda, the Minister for Development of Greater Bengaluru. This ambitious project will connect Attibele, Sarjapur, Dommasandra, Gunjur, Varthur, Whitefield, Kempegowda International Airport, and Nelamangala with each other.
According to a report by The Hindu, the project was initiated in 2017, and at that time, its estimated cost was fixed at ₹2,290 crore. However, due to changes made during implementation, increased costs of land acquisition, rising prices of materials, delays in work, and some additional works, the revised cost of the project has now increased to ₹3,409 crore.
It is expected that this additional funding will accelerate the road construction work. Specifically, the work in the Gunjur-Varthur area of East Bengaluru will speed up, as commuters are facing heavy traffic jams and inconvenience due to poor roads and ongoing infrastructure works here.
Minister Krishna Byre Gowda thanked Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and the Cabinet for approving this additional allocation. He stated that the Cabinet has expressed displeasure over the delays in the project and has instructed officials to complete the work as soon as possible.
The Minister further mentioned that there had been widespread criticism regarding the poor condition of Varthur Kodi and Sarjapur Road. Last month, school buses remained stranded for more than two hours on the feeder road of this area. Considering this situation, the Minister personally conducted a field inspection and subsequently requested a proposal for additional funds from the Public Works Department (PWD).
Under this project, the upgrading work of State Highway-35 (SH-35) was started in 2019, and its deadline was set until 2021. This plan includes the construction of a flyover at Varthur Kodi and widening the road between Varthur Kodi and Varthur-Sarjapur.
